A Hermès Resale Shop Suddenly Lowers Its Quote. Is That Reasonable?

A Hermès Resale Shop Suddenly Lowers Its Quote. Is That Reasonable?

You received one price online, but the shop says it needs to lower the price when you arrive. Is that normal? If they simply say “market conditions have changed,” can you ask them to explain? In what situations is a price reduction justified? If you are already at the shop, can you still change your mind?

A difference between an initial quote and the final quote after physical inspection is normal in itself; what is not reasonable is being unable to explain the specific reason. You can ask the shop to explain each adjustment and the corresponding amount, rather than simply telling you that “market conditions have changed.”

Why Are There Two Quotes?

The initial quote is based on photos and product information, while the final quote is based on physical inspection and authentication. They are naturally two different stages.

An online initial quote is usually provided after the shop receives photos. At XIAOMA, the timing is 30 minutes to 2 hours for standard models and within 24 hours for rare models and exotic leathers.

Once the bag arrives at the store, the physical inspection consists of three stages:

  1. Check the condition: Confirm the actual condition of use and the applicable condition grade.
  2. Check authenticity: Determine authenticity based on the overall craftsmanship, hardware, stamps, leather, and internal structure.
  3. Check accessories: Verify the completeness of the included accessories and whether they correspond to the original specifications.

These three stages are usually completed within 10 to 20 minutes. From authentication to completion of the contract generally takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Rare models, exotic leathers, or items requiring further verification may require a longer evaluation period, generally completed within 24 hours.

The parts that cannot be seen in photos are the parts that may create a difference between the two quotes. For why professional authentication needs to be carried out in multiple stages, see “Why Is Professional Authentication So Important?” (https://ginzaxiaoma.com/zh-CN/blog/professional-appraisal).

When Is a Price Reduction Justified?

A justified reduction can be linked to a specific issue and a corresponding amount; an unjustified reduction is explained only with a vague statement.

What the shop saysIs there a basis? What can you ask for?
The actual condition is lower than the grade assessed from the photosYesAsk which of the seven grades it falls under and why
Specific wear is identified (corner wear, hardware scratches)YesAsk how much each issue affects the price
Accessories do not match the declaration or are missingYesAsk which item is missing and how much it affects the price
Further authentication is requiredYesAsk how long verification will take and whether the quote will be held during that period
“Market conditions have changed”NoAsk them to explain the adjustment item by item
“The manager can only approve this price”NoAsk for the reason for the deduction in writing

The condition scale consists of seven grades: New / Unused & Stored / SA Excellent / A Excellent / Used AB / Used B / Used BC, with clear criteria for each grade. Only a platform with publicly available grading standards can clearly explain “which grade it has been lowered to, and why.”

For the detailed criteria for each of the seven grades, see “How to Tell Whether a Secondhand Hermès Shop Is Legitimate” (https://ginzaxiaoma.com/zh-CN/blog/identify-legit-reseller).

Condition is often cited as a reason for a price reduction because it is indeed one of the primary factors determining prices in the secondary market. According to publicly available information from international auction house Sotheby’s, the factors influencing the price of a Birkin are, in order, condition, size, and material. Visible signs of use such as hardware scratches and corner wear can reduce the price of the same model by around 30% (Sotheby’s What Influences an Hermès Birkin Bag Price). So the issue is not whether the shop can reduce the price because of condition, but whether it can clearly explain which grade the bag has been placed in and what specific issue supports that adjustment.

The impact of accessories also varies. In order of their impact on valuation, from greater to smaller: shoulder strap (where applicable) > Clochette > lock and keys > blue dust bag and blue box > standard dust bag and box. Functional accessories are part of the product itself and may need to be replaced if missing; dust bags and packaging boxes are supplementary items and generally have a smaller impact.

What Can You Ask for When They Cannot Explain the Reason?

Whether the reasons for price deductions are provided in writing is one of the ten points used to assess whether a platform is legitimate.

You can make three requests on the spot:

  1. Ask them to explain each adjustment and the corresponding amount rather than giving a vague explanation based on market conditions
  2. Ask them to include the reasons for deductions in the written quote
  3. Ask when payment will be made if the transaction proceeds at the adjusted price

If the shop refuses any of these requests, you can choose not to proceed and take your item back. A quote is not a contract, and there is no obligation to complete the transaction before signing.

For the complete ten-point checklist, see “How to Tell Whether a Secondhand Hermès Shop Is Legitimate” (https://ginzaxiaoma.com/zh-CN/blog/identify-legit-reseller).

If You Are Already at the Store, Can You Still Change Your Mind?

There is no statutory cooling-off period for transactions where you visit the store yourself or send the item yourself.

Japan’s Act on Specified Commercial Transactions provides a cooling-off period for “door-to-door purchases” (訪問購入), meaning purchase contracts entered into by a purchasing business outside a store or similar location (for example, at the customer’s home). For transactions that meet this definition, the customer can withdraw the application or cancel the contract in writing or by electronic record within 8 days from receiving the legally required written document (消費者庁 特定商取引法ガイド 訪問購入).

A transaction where the customer visits the store themselves or sends the item themselves does not constitute a “door-to-door purchase,” so the eight-day period does not apply.

Door-to-door purchasing is also a form of transaction in which consumer disputes are relatively concentrated. According to consultations related to door-to-door purchasing recorded in Japan’s National Consumer Affairs Center PIO-NET system, there were 7,523 cases in fiscal 2025. A common situation is that a business initially agrees to purchase used clothing or tableware, but then also purchases precious metals during the visit (国民生活センター 訪問購入).

Therefore, the step before signing is the most important: if you cannot agree on the price, do not sign; once you have signed, there is no statutory cooling-off period.

How Can You Minimize the Difference in Advance?

The more complete the information you provide, the smaller the price adjustment is likely to be after physical inspection.

We recommend providing photos of the following: full front, back, bottom, all four corners, base of the handles, hardware close-ups, interior, stamp location, a group photo of all included accessories, and a 360-degree video of the bag.

If there is wear, evidence of repair, or missing accessories, it is better to disclose this in advance and include it in the photos rather than have it pointed out after you arrive at the store. The more complete the information on which the initial quote is based, the smaller the room for a downward adjustment.

There are also three other points you can clarify in advance:

  1. Whether the initial quote will be provided in writing, including reasons for any deductions
  2. Whether any reduction after physical inspection will be explained item by item
  3. When payment will be made after the transaction

XIAOMA provides same-day cash payment. Once the transaction is confirmed, payment arrangements are generally completed within 30 minutes to 2 hours; the arrival time for bank transfers depends on the processing time of the local bank.
