Can You Still Sell an Hermès Bag with Worn and Discolored Corners?

Can You Still Sell an Hermès Bag with Worn and Discolored Corners?

Can you still sell an Hermès bag if all four corners have turned white from wear? Is it simply discoloration, or has the leather actually been damaged? What condition grade would it receive? Will corner wear result in a significantly lower offer?

An Hermès bag with discolored corners can still be submitted for a buyout assessment. Corner wear is one of the factors considered when evaluating condition and determining the offer. Whether the bag can ultimately be purchased must be confirmed through a physical appraisal. You cannot conclude that a bag is no longer sellable based solely on the description “the corners have turned white.”

What Should You Check First When the Corners of an Hermès Bag Have Turned White?

First, distinguish changes in surface color from actual damage to the leather or stitching. Then, take clear photos of each corner individually.

You can use the following checklist to document the condition yourself. This is a photo reference checklist, not a condition grading system or a guarantee of buyout acceptance:

Area to CheckWhat to Photograph Clearly
Corner surfaceWhere and how extensively the color has turned white, and how it differs from the surrounding leather
Corner leatherWhether the leather is frayed, cracked, or damaged, and whether there are any visible gaps or missing pieces
Corner stitchingWhether the stitching is worn through or loose, and whether there are any openings at the seams
Junction between the corners and baseWhether the wear extends to the base and whether there is any deformation
Previously repaired areasWhether the bag has undergone recoloring, leather repairs, or restitching; provide any available records as well

Do not photograph only the least worn corner, and avoid sending only distant shots. Photograph all four corners and include photos of the entire bag. This makes it possible to assess how localized wear relates to the overall condition.

What Condition Grade Does an Hermès Bag with White Corners Receive?

Condition is assessed based on the signs of use and imperfections across the entire bag. A single discolored corner is not enough to determine its grade.

XIAOMA uses the following seven condition grades:

GradeAssessment Criteria
Brand NewNever used, with no imperfections and in completely new condition
Unused (Stored)Unused, but does not meet the criteria for Brand New
SA ExcellentLightly used and very well maintained, with almost no signs of use; may have extremely minor surface scratches
A Very GoodLight use, well maintained, with some signs of wear
Pre-owned ABLight use, with some noticeable signs of wear and scratches
Pre-owned BSome scratches, imperfections, and signs of frequent use
Pre-owned BCNoticeable signs of wear

“Noticeable signs of wear” are part of the criteria for Pre-owned BC, but this does not mean every bag with discolored corners should automatically be classified as Pre-owned BC. The handles, hardware, interior lining, and overall shape must also be checked. The final grade is determined through a physical appraisal.

How Damaged Does an Hermès Bag Have to Be Before It Cannot Be Purchased?

The seven condition grades describe the state of an item. None of them should be treated as a universal rejection threshold.

If the leather is cracked, has holes, the stitching is loose, or the corners have been repaired, we recommend submitting photos of the damaged areas first and asking whether the bag can be accepted for assessment before arranging an in-store visit. Localized wear, overall damage, and repair history should be explained separately rather than simply described as “a little worn.”

Whether the bag can be purchased depends on its authenticity, overall condition, and the specific damage. An initial online quote does not mean the bag has already passed a physical appraisal.

Will Worn Corners Result in a Significantly Lower Offer?

Corner wear can be a reason for adjusting the offer, but any adjustment should be explained in terms of the specific location, severity, and corresponding amount.

You can ask the buyer to explain each adjustment individually rather than giving a vague explanation such as “market conditions have changed.” If they mention corner wear, follow up with these questions: Which corners are affected? What condition grade does the wear correspond to? How much has been deducted for this issue? Are there any other adjustments?

In its 2026 article, Complete Guide to Buying and Selling a Birkin, Sotheby's identifies condition as an important factor when assessing whether a Birkin is suitable for its sales channels and recommends providing clear photos of scratches and signs of wear. This highlights why damaged areas should be photographed individually. However, Sotheby's acceptance criteria are not the same as XIAOMA's buyout standards. If you want to compare multiple buyers, we recommend obtaining three to five quotes on the same day and using the middle price range as a reference. Keep the photos and accessory information consistent across all submissions, and make sure you are comparing buyout offers rather than different types of selling arrangements.

Should You Recolor an Hermès Bag with Worn Corners Before Selling It?

We recommend getting a valuation based on the bag's current condition first, then deciding whether repairs are worthwhile. Do not assume that making the bag look newer through recoloring will automatically result in a higher payout.

Send the appraiser photos of the wear before any treatment and explain whether you are considering recoloring. If the bag has already been repaired, proactively disclose the areas that were treated and provide any repair records. The post-repair appearance, original damage, and repair history should all be accurately described.

How Can You Get an Initial Quote for an Hermès Bag with Worn Corners?

Start by providing photos of the entire bag and close-ups of all four corners. After receiving an initial online quote, you can decide whether to proceed with an in-store physical appraisal.

Before the appraisal, we recommend providing the following photos: full front view, back, base, all four corners, handle bases, close-ups of the hardware, interior lining, stamp location, a group photo of all included accessories, and a video showing the bag from all angles.

XIAOMA's initial online quote turnaround time is 30 minutes to 2 hours for standard models, and within 24 hours for rare models and exotic leathers. When taking photos, preserve the bag's actual colors and signs of wear. Do not use filters or retouching to conceal any damage.
